E.ON’s Takeover of OVO Highlights Growing Energy Market Consolidation

E.ON’s takeover of OVO Energy marks a significant development in the UK domestic energy market, bringing two major suppliers under common ownership and further concentrating the market among a small number of large players.

Following completion of the deal, E.ON’s enlarged business is expected to serve around 9.6 million customers, making it the UK’s second-largest domestic energy supplier, behind Octopus Energy. According to Cornwall Insight, Octopus Energy, E.ON and British Gas will collectively account for approximately 74% of the domestic energy market, with the five largest suppliers controlling around 90%.

The deal highlights the continued consolidation of the UK energy sector, raising questions about competition, customer choice and the potential impact on pricing over the longer term. While the acquisition relates to the domestic market rather than business energy, developments of this scale are worth watching across the wider industry.

Although the deal focuses on domestic energy, it highlights the changing dynamics of the wider UK energy market and the growing influence of its largest suppliers.
