Understanding Your Gas Bill

What does your gas bill include?

  • Unit rate - the price you pay per kWh used

  • Standing charge - daily fixed cost for being connected to the gas network

  • Consumption - actual or estimated usage

  • MPRN (Meter Point Reference Number) - the unique ID for your gas supply

  • VAT & Climate Change Levy (CCL) - government taxes applied to gas usage

Why is my bill sometimes estimated?
If you don’t supply meter readings, your supplier may estimate. This can cause incorrect charges. Submitting regular reads (or using a smart meter) ensures accuracy.

How is gas usage calculated?
Gas meters record in cubic meters (m³) or cubic feet (ft³). Suppliers convert this into kWh using:

  • Volume (from your meter)

  • Calorific value (energy content of the gas)

  • Correction factor (to account for temperature and pressure)

How can I check my bill is correct?

  • Compare your meter readings with billed usage

  • Check the MPRN matches your premises

  • Review VAT and CCL charges to confirm they’re correct
