Update on Tomato Energy

We know there’s been a lot of news recently about Tomato Energy, and we wanted to give you a clear update. The company has invited administrators in, and while this is a challenging time, we want to reassure you that everything is being carefully managed.

We’ve been in contact with every one of our customers affected and are actively managing the situation.

What’s Going On

  • Tomato Energy has invited administrators in, signalling they are exploring whether a restructuring or insolvency route may be necessary.

  • The energy regulator, Ofgem, has proposed a £1,500,000 financial penalty on Tomato for failing to maintain sufficient liquidity - that is, not keeping enough cash or reserves to reliably pay its financial obligations as they fall due.

  • Earlier in 2025, Tomato was banned from taking on any new customers after accruing more than £3 million in debt.

  • Despite all this, Tomato is still trading and trying to manage through this period. The notice to appoint administrators gives it a short window to act.

These steps (administration, fines, regulatory action) don’t necessarily mean customers should panic - but they do underscore how serious the financial pressures on smaller energy suppliers can become.

What It Means for You

  • You should continue paying your bills as usual so that your energy supply remains uninterrupted.

  • If Tomato does enter liquidation, Ofgem will appoint a “Supplier of Last Resort” (SoLR) to take over all customer accounts - ensuring service continuity and protecting credit balances.

  • Once a new supplier is in place, we will get multiple quotes to help ensure you are being offered a fair and competitive rate.

  • If the new supplier can’t honour Tomato’s current terms, you will usually be free to switch without penalty.

Recognising the Team at Tomato

We want to acknowledge how difficult this is - not just for customers, but for the team at Tomato. They’ve been a reliable supplier, and many of their staff now face uncertainty about their jobs and futures. We hold a lot of respect for their professionalism and dedication, especially in these trying conditions.

What You Can Do Right Now

  • Keep copies of your recent bills, meter readings, payment records, and any communications with Tomato.

  • Note your current credit or debit balance with Tomato (if any).

  • Keep an eye on incoming emails or letters - both from Tomato and from Ofgem - for any announcements.

  • Don’t rush to switch; wait for the official notification of a new supplier via the SoLR process.

If you have questions at any time, please reach out to our team - we’re here to help.

Update 6/11/2025:

Tomato Energy has now unfortunately gone into liquidation. Our team is already in the process of contacting all clients who were with them to explain what happens next and how we’re supporting them. We had begun preparing behind the scenes as soon as this outcome became a possibility, so we could respond quickly and provide guidance. Please rest assured that we’re doing everything we can to make the transition as smooth as possible and to ensure your energy supply remains uninterrupted.
