MHHS Rollout: The Next Step in UK Energy Settlements

The UK electricity market is undergoing one of its most significant transformations in decades: the rollout of Market-wide Half-Hourly Settlement (MHHS). Designed to bring precision, transparency, and flexibility to electricity billing, MHHS is poised to change how businesses, suppliers, and energy markets operate.

What’s Happening Now?

Central Systems Go Live
In September 2025, the central systems that underpin MHHS went live. These systems are capable of processing the enormous volume of half-hourly consumption data that the market will soon generate, marking a critical milestone toward full implementation.

MPAN Migration Underway
Starting 22 October 2025, electricity suppliers have begun migrating Meter Point Administration Numbers (MPANs) to half-hourly settlement arrangements. Early estimates suggest that around 80% of meters will be migrated by October 2026, ensuring that most businesses and households will soon have their electricity consumption settled on actual usage rather than estimates.

Full Rollout Timeline
MHHS is scheduled for full market implementation by May 2027. By this point, the UK electricity market will be fully operating on half-hourly settlements, fundamentally changing the way energy consumption is measured, billed, and optimised.

Why It Matters for Businesses

1. Billing Accuracy
No more waiting for estimated bills. With half-hourly data, businesses will pay for exactly what they use - potentially uncovering hidden savings or inefficiencies.

2. Unlocking Flexibility
The granular data MHHS provides will allow businesses to optimize energy usage, shift demand to lower-cost periods, and participate in emerging flexibility markets. For large energy users, this could translate into significant cost reductions.

3. Regulatory Compliance
Businesses must ensure their internal systems, reporting processes, and data management are MHHS-ready. Failing to adapt could result in compliance issues or missed opportunities in new energy services markets.

What’s Next

The MHHS rollout represents a paradigm shift for the UK energy sector. Suppliers, system operators, and large energy consumers must all align their operations to take full advantage of the benefits - from accurate billing to smarter energy management.

For businesses, now is the time to audit energy systems, review supplier arrangements, and prepare for a data-driven future in electricity consumption and settlement.
