The RTS Signal is Ending – Here’s What it Means for Your Energy Supply
For over 40 years, the Radio Teleswitch Service (RTS) has helped homes across the UK manage their heating, hot water, and electricity usage - especially those on time-of-use tariffs like Economy 7 and Economy 10. But that era is coming to an end.
RTS is being phased out, and if your property or portfolio still uses an RTS meter, it's time to act.
Why Is RTS Being Shut Down?
RTS relies on longwave radio signals sent from aging transmitters that were built decades ago. These transmitters are now so old that their components can’t be replaced - and if they fail, they can’t be fixed.
The operator responsible for the service has warned of an increasing risk of signal failure. That’s why the energy industry - backed by the government and Ofgem - has agreed to a controlled shutdown of the system, rather than risk a sudden blackout for hundreds of thousands of customers.
What Happens If I Do Nothing?
If your property still uses an RTS meter and the signal is switched off in your area, your heating and hot water could stop working - either immediately or shortly after.
That’s why suppliers are urging all affected customers to replace their RTS meters now, before the signal disappears for good.
Who’s Affected?
Households with RTS or teleswitch meters
Properties on Economy 7, Economy 10, or heat-specific tariffs
Vulnerable customers and those on the Priority Services Register
Care homes, schools, and social housing providers
Energy suppliers will contact all impacted customers directly - using unique meter codes to schedule replacements in small regional groups. Local councils, MPs, and housing associations are also being informed to help spread the message.
What About Vulnerable Customers?
The industry is prioritising support for:
People on the Priority Services Register
Residents with medical or mobility needs
Sheltered housing, schools, and care homes
If you or your tenants have specific needs, it's essential to let your supplier know when booking a meter upgrade.
What Should You Do Now?
✅ Check if your property uses an RTS meter – look for the words “Radio Teleswitch” on your electricity meter, or contact your supplier to confirm.
✅ Book a replacement appointment – it’s free, and your supplier will install a modern smart meter or equivalent alternative.
✅ Let your supplier know about any special requirements – this ensures vulnerable residents are prioritised.
