RTS Phase-Out: Where Are We Now?

The Radio Teleswitch Service (RTS), which has helped manage multi-rate electricity tariffs for decades, is being phased out across Great Britain. This longwave radio system is being replaced because the transmitters are now at the end of their operational life, and failure could disrupt heating, hot water, and electricity for hundreds of thousands of sites.

Current Status

  • The RTS signal began being switched off on 30 June 2025, but instead of a nationwide cut-off, suppliers are replacing meters in stages to minimise disruption.

  • Originally, around 800,000 RTS meters were identified for replacement.

  • As of May 2025, approximately 315,000 RTS meters still needed upgrading.

  • More recent reporting shows that the number of meters requiring replacement has fallen to under 300,000, with roughly 208,000 remaining as of August 2025.

  • The phased replacement programme continues into 2026, with different regions transitioning at different times.

Why This Matters for Businesses

  • HV and multi-site operations often rely on multi-rate tariffs. If RTS meters aren’t upgraded in time, tariff switching could be disrupted, potentially increasing energy costs.

  • Sites with larger or multiple meters may require specialist planning to manage the replacement process without operational disruption.

  • Because the programme is staged, proactive engagement with suppliers can help avoid gaps in functionality.

What Businesses Should Do

  1. Check whether any meters are still RTS-enabled. Look for “Radio Teleswitch” on the meter or confirm with your supplier.

  2. Schedule replacements where required, especially for HV or multi-site sites.

  3. Communicate any special requirements to your supplier to minimise disruption.

For businesses with multiple sites or HV meters, expert guidance can help coordinate replacements and ensure a smooth transition while avoiding loss of tariff switching functionality.
